enleth, could be, as the tendency is then push out so safer
2017-10-19 11:33:02
enleth
archivist: I wonder why isn't it a thing then, for manual lathes
2017-10-19 11:33:20
enleth
the holder would have to be kinda tall, compromising rigidity a bit, but, well
2017-10-19 11:33:36
archivist
I suppose for normal a rear post is just as easy
2017-10-19 11:35:38
enleth
if the lathe is equipped with one, sure
2017-10-19 11:36:01
enleth
I mean, at least with an attachment point
2017-10-19 11:37:36
archivist
the old capstan at work had front and rear posts http://www.collection.archivist.info/archive/DJCPD/PD/2008/2008_10_07_Richards_of_Burton_clockworks/P1010205.JPG
2017-10-19 11:37:53
archivist
the rear is only just visible
2017-10-19 11:38:36
archivist
that thing never failed to part if the tool was set correctly
2017-10-19 11:39:38
enleth
I'm sure I've seen many manual lathes big enough to support a rear toolpost that just didn't have any means of attaching one because the flat top surface on the carriage didn't extend far enough back
2017-10-19 11:40:40
archivist
they would have had to make the slides good enough to resist the lift I suppose
2017-10-19 11:40:55
enleth
good point
2017-10-19 11:43:50
enleth
sadly, I don't think any soviet bloc lathes I've seen had a rear post and that's probably what I'll be getting next year
2017-10-19 11:44:12
enleth
cheap, relatively easy to find in decent condition and local
2017-10-19 11:46:18
gloops
the soviets made good cameras
2017-10-19 11:47:18
enleth
gloops: you can still get the best ones, newly made, there's a company that bought the Kiev Arsenal camera tooling
2017-10-19 11:47:39
enleth
gloops: http://araxfoto.com/cameras/
2017-10-19 11:48:25
enleth
$600 for a prism medium format camera that accepts Hasselblad backs
2017-10-19 11:48:32
gloops
as they advanced on germany they dismantled the camera factories completely and sent them back to russia, zeiss and leica etc, but even with all the designs and documentation and tools, they still didnt quite manage to make an accurate copy
2017-10-19 11:48:39
gloops
couldnt understand the maths
2017-10-19 11:49:49
gloops
yes enleth, in fact there are still stocks of new cameras from production times, they made so many with no consideration of the market, you can still get them boxed unopened
2017-10-19 11:50:52
enleth
gloops: it's either an urban legend or no one gave a shit about assigning a proper engineer to supervise setup of those stolen factories
2017-10-19 11:52:20
enleth
Russia has always had an abundance of excellent mathematicians, they were the second ones to have working nukes after all
2017-10-19 11:52:36
gloops
hmm true
2017-10-19 11:52:38
enleth
probably no one gave a shit
2017-10-19 11:53:22
enleth
besides, they were able to improve some things in those cameras
2017-10-19 11:53:37
enleth
AFAIK their lenses were better than the original German ones
2017-10-19 11:53:39
gloops
the lenses are biting sharp, but the out of focus - bokeh as its known is often bizarre
2017-10-19 11:54:13
gloops
abberations, distortions etc, the japanese did nail it
2017-10-19 11:54:51
enleth
that's a different league entirely
2017-10-19 11:55:10
gloops
the japanese only worked on what the russians had
2017-10-19 11:56:08
sync
the russians are capable of producing equal optics and did so before the japanese figured it out
2017-10-19 11:56:15
sync
they just don't do it for consumer stuff
2017-10-19 11:59:20
gloops
strange they would not put their best on the market sync
2017-10-19 11:59:41
sync
it is not their business
2017-10-19 12:00:31
gloops
they made thousands of tons of cameras for western consumption - mostly cheap poor quality, i have a box full lol
2017-10-19 12:01:01
sync
I have a peleng stabiscope, the optical quality is superb
2017-10-19 12:01:30
sync
well, the japanese also made cheapshit cameras
2017-10-19 12:01:36
sync
so did anybody else
2017-10-19 12:02:03
sync
I also have some russian tele optics, they work very well
2017-10-19 12:05:17
gloops
the standard issue 50mm prime was the helios 44, i mean a nice sharp useable lens, very good in fact
2017-10-19 12:05:42
Loetmichel
a friend had a 800mm fixed tele for his canon AE1... back in the day. Alos russian production.
2017-10-19 12:06:22
gloops
but it was up against the canon l lenses, the minoltas, when examined seriously the image quality didnt stand up
2017-10-19 12:06:37
Loetmichel
Sharp as a razor, tough as nails and absolutely not aviable new, only on shady channels from across the iron curtain back in the days ;)
2017-10-19 12:07:49
Loetmichel
nicknamed "DAS OFENROHR" (The stove pipe) for its black "shriveled up exterior" and its size and weight
2017-10-19 12:18:16
gloops
well, look at chinese stuff now, everybody moans about the quality, but we all buy it
2017-10-19 12:46:58
trasz
folks, some time ago i've pushed some patches to make linuxcnc work on freebsd.
2017-10-19 12:47:09
trasz
now, those patches were the 'clean' ones.
2017-10-19 12:47:26
trasz
there's, however, still a number of patches that i'm not sure about.
2017-10-19 12:47:48
trasz
is someone interested in taking a look, to see if there's anything left that could be upstreamed?
2017-10-19 12:47:59

current list of out-of-tree diffs is here: https://svnweb.freebsd.org/ports/head/cad/linuxcnc-devel/files/

trasz, best in the dev channel #linuxcnc-devel
2017-10-19 12:49:06

Munt
Hey folks I'm about to buy a CNC router. I've been asked if I want Mach3, DSP or NK105. Which would you recommend ?
2017-10-19 13:47:26
gloops
ive only used mach3 out of those
2017-10-19 13:50:21
archivist
linuxcnc!!!!
2017-10-19 13:50:42
Munt
I guess I have a lot to learn. I'm not sure how LinuxCNC works in conjuntions with these different set ups
2017-10-19 13:51:15
gloops
well, i have designed a primitive rotating ballnut, with absolutely no calculations regarding deflection or bearing spacings and so on
2017-10-19 13:51:36
gloops
linuxcnc doesnt work with those setups - it replaces them
2017-10-19 13:52:03
archivist
Munt, try going into a rolls royce garage and asking is ford better than skoda
2017-10-19 13:52:15
Munt
I guess I'm curious about how LinuxCNC interfaces with the machine control systems
2017-10-19 13:52:25
archivist
it is the control
2017-10-19 13:52:38
gloops
with 5mm screw pitch, maximum motor rpm 1000, pulleys geared 3-1 top speed would be 15000mm/mm
2017-10-19 13:52:41
Munt
I thought it was software that ran on the computer ?
2017-10-19 13:52:52
archivist
yes
2017-10-19 13:52:55
gloops
compared to max of 5000 with screw rotated
2017-10-19 13:53:23
Munt
It can "speak" via USB / Parallel port to the board that controls the steppers?
2017-10-19 13:53:38
Munt
sorry for the hardcore noobishness
2017-10-19 13:54:03
pcw_home
gloops: LinuxCNC runs fine on Ubuntu
2017-10-19 13:54:15
gloops
oh its all very daunting for everyone to start with Munt
2017-10-19 13:54:31
Munt
gloops : I hear ya :p
2017-10-19 13:54:33
gloops
i started 6 months ago - its childs play even to me now
2017-10-19 13:54:38
archivist
usb should not be used for machine control due to latency issues
2017-10-19 13:54:53
gloops
pcw it does?
2017-10-19 13:54:55
Munt
archivist : Thought this also.
2017-10-19 13:55:31
archivist
others that use usb hand off part of the work to another computer
2017-10-19 13:55:47
archivist
but issues still exist
2017-10-19 13:55:56
gloops
linuxcnc is as easy as mach3 to configure, it has a step config waizard, you just input the physical characteristics of your machine, and away you go
2017-10-19 13:56:29
gloops
pcw how does one run linuxcnc on ubuntu?
2017-10-19 13:56:38
Munt
I like hte idea of mapping the surface of a PCB and milling it using LinuxCNC
2017-10-19 13:58:43
gloops
well, as i say im no expert, but this is the thing with linuxcnc over other control software, you can set it up to run your router simply and problem free, cut signs, make carvings all day easy, but you can also go further with linuxcnc
2017-10-19 13:59:23
archivist
a lot further
2017-10-19 13:59:42
gloops
ethernet interfacing, high speeds, and loads of other stuff i know nothing about
2017-10-19 14:03:21
Munt
SO if my machine had an NK-105 Controller I could still use LinuxCNC to operate it without hardware modifications ?
2017-10-19 14:06:37
archivist
probably not
2017-10-19 14:10:02
Munt
Thank you archivist. Would the USB connection from the Mach3 option allow for LinuxCNC operation without hardware mods ?
2017-10-19 14:10:28
Munt
( If I read correctly it seems that they have no option for parallel port mach3 on this controller )
2017-10-19 14:10:55
archivist
linuxcnc does not use usb except as a jog box
2017-10-19 14:11:19
Munt
Ah. So I need a Parallel port ?
2017-10-19 14:11:39
Munt
s/port/input to the CNC
2017-10-19 14:11:59
archivist
there is an ethernet solution not just parallel port
2017-10-19 14:12:57
archivist
is the router available without a controller
2017-10-19 14:13:16
archivist
or choose a different make etc
2017-10-19 14:14:42
Munt
thanks a lot for the food for thought.
2017-10-19 14:15:18
Munt
I'd much rather run Linux on my control PC than windows
2017-10-19 14:42:49
gloops
what sort of router are you getting Munt?
2017-10-19 14:43:14
Munt
https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/MINI-Low-price-CNC-Router-Machine_60672881007.html this is the one I'm looking at
2017-10-19 14:47:17
gloops
thats looks better than a lot i have seen, some good components, hiwin rails, leadshine drivers and so on, a proper spindle
2017-10-19 14:53:41

cast iron! looks aluminium to me
2017-10-19 14:53:51

2017-10-19 14:55:14
gloops
maybe its pvc surface
2017-10-19 14:55:47
pcw_home
gloops: there are different ways to instal LinuxCNC on Debian derivatives (Ubuntu, Mint, etc)
2017-10-19 14:55:49
pcw_home
Packages are the easiest but building from source works an a wider range of OS's
2017-10-19 14:56:28
gloops
ill have to look at getting the packages pcw, i have searched but didnt find anything
2017-10-19 14:57:01
gloops
would be convenient as i run ubuntu normally
2017-10-19 14:58:31
pcw_home
My home desktop runs Ubuntu 16.04 (and LinuxCNC)
2017-10-19 15:00:35
Munt
pvc table you say ... lemme look
2017-10-19 15:01:26
archivist
in the overview section
2017-10-19 15:02:04
Munt
mmm I see it. didnt think that would be possible
2017-10-19 15:02:38
Munt
they seem to make them to order in a lot of respects I think I could ask for a different table
2017-10-19 17:00:22
Todd_Z
I think it was more of a development philosophy schism between some of the developers of Linuxcnc and those who moved to Machinekit.
2017-10-19 17:03:05
Todd_Z
oops sorry that was a reply to an old message (didn't realize I wasn't looking at the current chat)

CaptHindsight
Todd_Z: it's part of what I call the Fantasy CNC Controller Contest
2017-10-19 17:50:58
CaptHindsight
when repraps were supposedly going to revolutionize manufacturing they thought a small CNC controller would be required
2017-10-19 17:52:19
CaptHindsight
the reality is that the low cost ARM boards with enough GPU to run a CNC are either low cost with closed GPU drivers or...
2017-10-19 17:52:31
CaptHindsight
expensive with open GPU drivers
2017-10-19 17:55:28
CaptHindsight
with closed gpu drivers you are stuck with whatever kernel they decided to use and build against or modify the kernel you want to use to make it compatible with the GPU driver binary
2017-10-19 17:56:27
CaptHindsight
imx6 and the rpi3 both have gpu driver source but the boards are >$30
2017-10-19 17:59:39
CaptHindsight
the allwinner arm SOC's are <$6 in volume and use closed gpu accel drivers but they have so many cores that they can run LCNC and support 20+ fps at high res using the other CPU cores for rendering
2017-10-19 18:01:50
CaptHindsight
the allwinner SOC's don't have PRU's and the GPIO can't be used for software stepping, so you need a $10 FPGA for that
2017-10-19 18:02:13
Loetmichel
Uh?
2017-10-19 18:02:31
Loetmichel
did i miss that there is an ARM LCNC port?
2017-10-19 18:02:42
CaptHindsight
maybe
2017-10-19 18:03:04
Loetmichel
cou someone be nice and gimme a link?
2017-10-19 18:03:09
Loetmichel
+ld
2017-10-19 18:03:43
CaptHindsight
we have been building LCNC for ARM for the past 5 years
2017-10-19 18:04:07
cradek
http://buildbot.linuxcnc.org/ shows several armhf builds
2017-10-19 18:04:37
Loetmichel
ah, thats why i never noticed it... i only used the Live CDs
2017-10-19 18:06:39
CaptHindsight
for some reason using an FPGA with an ARM soc is bad/cheating/poo poo ... don't ask me why, I don't understand it either
2017-10-19 18:09:04
CaptHindsight
the BBB fits into the higher price category but supports stepping without an FPGA but ...
2017-10-19 18:10:22
CaptHindsight
has closed GPU drivers so rendering is maybe 2-3 fps and has not enough CPU cores to make software rendering fast enough
2017-10-19 18:12:11
CaptHindsight
the ARM SOC on the Rpi3 has open gpu drivers but needs an fpga for stepping and Broadcon won't sell you just the chip
2017-10-19 18:14:57
CaptHindsight
the imx6 is more expensive than the Broadcon SOC (on the Rpi3) has open GPU drivers and you can buy the chip
2017-10-19 18:15:21
CaptHindsight
but it still needs and FPGA for fast stepping
2017-10-19 18:16:55
Loetmichel
anyone tried to find enough GPIO on a cheap 100eur Tablet?
2017-10-19 18:17:02
Loetmichel
to run Lcnc on it?
2017-10-19 18:17:35
CaptHindsight
if you can build boards into the K's then a $6 Allwinner SOC with a $10 FPGA board will have fast stepping and render video fast enough
2017-10-19 18:17:44
CaptHindsight
but nobody has built that
2017-10-19 18:18:48
CaptHindsight
Loetmichel: I was waiting for that back in 2010 but the tablet SOC's all left out GPIO and didn't even route the SPI pads on the circuit board
2017-10-19 18:20:03
Loetmichel
Loetmichel has a teclast tpad x80 pro here
2017-10-19 18:20:06
Loetmichel
for 60 eur
2017-10-19 18:20:14
Loetmichel
that has an intel chip inside
2017-10-19 18:20:30
Loetmichel
would be interesting to see if you could get an isa bus out of that
2017-10-19 18:20:35
Loetmichel
or GPIOs ;)
2017-10-19 18:22:37
sync
of you just use ethernet CaptHindsight
2017-10-19 18:24:38
sync
we are currently fiddling a solution that uses the powerSTEP01 drivers getting talked to by some stm32f4 that connects with linuxcnc via ethernet
2017-10-19 18:44:59
James628
Hi! Could anyone tell me why I get "can't initialize iptables table filter, permission denied " when I run linuxcnc with 7i92?
2017-10-19 18:45:04
CaptHindsight
<-- back
2017-10-19 18:45:41
CaptHindsight
Loetmichel: have a link?
2017-10-19 18:47:24
CaptHindsight
Loetmichel: no LPT (not surprised) and no Ethernet
2017-10-19 18:48:56
JT-Shop
James628: can you run a sim from the config picker?
2017-10-19 18:51:02
Loetmichel
CaptHindsight: as i said: it would be nice to have an isa/pcie-bus accessible inside
2017-10-19 18:51:06
pcw_mesa
James628: what OS? (I think that's an issue with Stretch and perhaps Jessie)
2017-10-19 18:51:18
Loetmichel
so one could add any peripherial needed
2017-10-19 18:51:52
pcw_mesa
newer PCs are not likely to have ISA (just LPC) and notebooks may not have that
2017-10-19 18:52:26
Loetmichel
pcw_home: if there is a pcie-lane acceesible one could add a bridge
2017-10-19 18:52:44
James628
JT-Shop: I am using latest master RIP on Linux Mit 18
2017-10-19 18:53:10
pcw_mesa
Yeah Mint 18 has that issue
2017-10-19 18:54:39
James628
pcw: someting to change in /etc/sudores file maybe?
2017-10-19 18:54:48
pcw_mesa
Notebooks may not even have PCIE
2017-10-19 18:56:25
James628
Or just ignore this message ? Otherwise the 7i92 works well
2017-10-19 18:57:19
pcw_mesa
James628: maybe... Ive just been ignoring it on newer dists
2017-10-19 18:58:42
James628
I could not find any reasonable hint with google, so will ignore it. Thanks!!
2017-10-19 18:58:47
pcw_mesa
the theory is the using iptables blocks any other access to the 7I92
2017-10-19 18:59:25
pcw_mesa
but if you use a off-the-wall ip address like 10.10.10.10 I don't _think_ its an issue
2017-10-19 19:00:09
CaptHindsight
sync: yes, we have been using Ethernet with the Allwinner boards
2017-10-19 19:01:30
CaptHindsight
sync: somebody is trying to prove me wrong and get the Allwinner GPIO toggling fast enough synched in real time
2017-10-19 19:02:41
CaptHindsight
maybe it's possible but the docs don't cover how GPIO is connected to the bus to the CPU cores or how its arbiter works or access to the arbiter
2017-10-19 19:03:33
CaptHindsight
he mentioned something about how the GPIO is accessed via MMIO
2017-10-19 19:03:42
CaptHindsight
I haven't looked
2017-10-19 19:06:24

2017-10-19 19:21:02
SpeedEvil
On the topic of stepping, there seems little reason to me why you can't lock off a core from linux, and use it as a fast micro. The only issues will be the jitter around internal bus contention, which is ~0
2017-10-19 19:21:10

2017-10-19 19:21:17

there is just no need for it
2017-10-19 19:21:34

2017-10-19 19:23:25
sync
what would be the second order one?
2017-10-19 19:24:14
SpeedEvil
Open loop controlling speed of one motor helps you with immediate step-rate. It does not fix any required movements of other motors.
2017-10-19 19:24:31
SpeedEvil
In some cases, programmed movements of all motors is all you need.
2017-10-19 19:25:51
sync
that depends on the driver you use, but why would that be openloop
2017-10-19 19:25:59
sync
say, with a powerstep01 you get position feedback
2017-10-19 19:26:08
sync
and you just tell it a velocity
2017-10-19 19:26:12

2017-10-19 19:29:18

You're changing from a step/dir command to a programmed velocity/accelleration. The second has a larger latency, but it does have a latency requirement
2017-10-19 19:29:36
sync
thy does the second have a larger latency?
2017-10-19 19:29:58
sync
if the motor performs the command within your servo cycle therer is no difference to step/dir
2017-10-19 19:30:01

the benefit of bearings on the body nut is that none of the screw is lost, but i didnt want to mount anything there, i suppose it is strong enough though

there are also HRM S03 versions

2017-10-20 08:24:31

yeah, thatd have racking issues
2017-10-20 08:25:42

wider spacing of the carriages to stop that
2017-10-20 08:26:21

these are interesting https://www.damencnc.com/products/mechanical-components/rack-pinion/r-p-drive-antibacklash-diy-includes-gears15t/_404_w_74_554_GB_1 too expensive though

you can adjust spacing to adjust backlash
2017-10-20 08:31:26
Valen
I wonder why they don't do anti backlash on acme screws with a second nut and some springs, I guess too much friction
2017-10-20 08:32:12
RyanS
yeah, that would mean expensive gearbox for dual pinions
2017-10-20 08:32:36
CaptHindsight
friction will depend on the spring pressure and the pitch of the screw and nut materials
2017-10-20 08:33:23
CaptHindsight
you could use two servos and control the lash and direction in HAL

RyanS
archivist i've heard plasma tables with steppers do 300 mm/s.. i'd be happy with 220mm/s, but the fastest my plasma needs to go is 135mm/s
2017-10-20 08:45:27
archivist
my milling machine has that made about 1942
2017-10-20 08:46:11
archivist
as steppers get bigger they also are slower
2017-10-20 08:47:42
RyanS
ok, so smaller steppers with gear reduction is better?
2017-10-20 08:48:11
archivist
gear reduction adds backlash
2017-10-20 08:49:32
archivist
gearbox adds resolution and torque but your stepper motor still has a speed limit
2017-10-20 08:51:37
RyanS
that's why most diy plasma uses 5:1 timing belt reduction (they have preload, or so i read) , not 30:1 planetary
2017-10-20 08:53:46
archivist
so many compromises, occasional milling probably as well as plasma is probably pushing it a bit
2017-10-20 08:56:56
RyanS
yeah , i can't see a reason why plasma needs much torque , so just use microstepping & 5:1 belt reduction
2017-10-20 08:57:44
archivist
you want torque to accelerate
2017-10-20 09:05:18
RyanS
not sure how much acceleration plasma needs--i've read 0.1g or 980 mm/s^2
2017-10-20 09:07:31
RyanS
no idea how you can specify a unit of time squared but maths was never my strength
2017-10-20 09:07:49

the acceleration is key
2017-10-20 09:07:53
archivist
mass/weight of gantry and then you can calculate forces
2017-10-20 09:08:27
gloops_
10m/min is theoretical, you have to consider your cutting might be in lines of 50mm - nowhere near enough time to reach 10m/min
2017-10-20 09:08:37
gloops_
youll be lucky to cut anwhere near
2017-10-20 09:08:47
archivist
working back through a gear train is a pain
2017-10-20 09:09:09
gloops_
the cut is changing direction all the time, you cannot accelrate in that distance
2017-10-20 09:10:30
gloops_
not with stepper motors anyway, you want servos
2017-10-20 09:10:42
RyanS
that was for a umm 40kg gantry that 980 mm/s^2 was mentioned
2017-10-20 09:33:54

i cant speak for the theory but this uses 4 Nm steppers and 200mm/s (they claim anyhow )

Only to notice that i badly oversprayed the primer on the left :-( -> http://www.cyrom.org/palbum/main.php?g2_itemId=16851&g2_imageViewsIndex=1

but since it ships from China with 2-3mm of lash the twist is not a problem :)
2017-10-20 19:14:28

gloops: wood is never stronger than steel. Wood of a similar weight, probably in a different arrangement than the steel may be stronger in some cases, it's really very far from a clear answer and depends on piles of things.
2017-10-20 19:29:41
MarcelineVQ
If you want to bike while milling you'd want the stability, you could go for quad but passing off a trike as a bike is easier than a quad, trike at least rhyms.

when it comes to deliveries ups is more reliable than purolator here, purolator just leaves your shit at the door if you're not there. I'd like to take advantage of that poor practice for free stuff, saying you didn't get an item I mean, but I'd hate for the drivers to suffer for company policy

frustrating lathe today, first it would not move into high gear, now when in low gear the handwheel pin won't stay out

why is there a spring on the pin that makes it move the wrong way?

i'm thinking of building a new and large CNC. anyone recently purchased a set of linear rails for a large machine (biggest axis >= 1500mm) and had them arrive within tolerances, acceptable quality and straight/undamaged?
2017-10-21 03:02:43
sync
rails usually do not come extremely straight as they are just profile ground, you have to align them anyway
2017-10-21 03:03:48
rebecca_
how do you go about that? carefully hitting them in just the right spots>
2017-10-21 03:03:51
rebecca_
?
2017-10-21 03:09:24
sync
no, you mount them on your machine bed and then go from screw to screw and either shim them if need be, although unlikely but you have to adjust them from side to side
2017-10-21 03:09:35
rebecca_
ahhhh
2017-10-21 03:09:37
rebecca_
ok
2017-10-21 03:09:49
sync
if your bed has a locating edge milled into them you can just tighten them against that
2017-10-21 03:09:54
sync
as the profile is correct
2017-10-21 03:10:13
rebecca_
that's a good idea
2017-10-21 03:10:17

2017-10-21 03:11:46
sync
read your linear guide vendors manual
2017-10-21 03:11:50
sync
it'll tell you what to do
2017-10-21 03:12:06
sync
a edge will also increase stiffness
2017-10-21 03:12:35
rebecca_
i think i would construct the machine body primarily from pieces cut on a larger CNC i know to be quite dimensionally consistent so milling a slot to align/hold the guides should make it relatively straightforward

Tom_L
so is the orange 5v tolerant?
2017-10-22 00:28:18
Tom_L
seems most arm stuff is 3.3v
2017-10-22 00:29:41
pcw_home
I would not expect any notebook/cellphone SOC to have any 5V tolerant pins
2017-10-22 00:29:43
pcw_home
Any some pins may only be 1.8V tolerant
2017-10-22 00:29:52
pcw_home
and some pins
2017-10-22 00:30:12
pcw_home
(USB interfaces being a possible exception)
2017-10-22 00:42:55
phipli
Tom_L, don't think it is
2017-10-22 00:43:30
phipli
(5v tolerant)
2017-10-22 00:43:38
Tom_L
yeah i figured as much
2017-10-22 00:43:43
Tom_L
most arm stuff isn't
2017-10-22 00:43:54
Tom_L
but they could have buffered the io
2017-10-22 00:43:56
phipli
itsn't usually an issue with outputs
2017-10-22 00:44:15
phipli
because most 5v logic triggers around 2.5 to 3v
2017-10-22 00:44:17
phipli
but...
2017-10-22 00:44:21
phipli
inputs :(
2017-10-22 00:44:46
phipli
I have some stuff for level shifting though
2017-10-22 00:45:14
phipli
sometimes it is easier to just plug in a usb capable MCU and using it as a buffer
2017-10-22 00:48:36
pcw_home
The problem with buffering is you lose the ability to control direction without add a bunch of stuff

Yeah but they are crap for high speed signals
2017-10-22 00:49:43
phipli
two mosfets
2017-10-22 00:49:55
phipli
faster than the 4000 series level shifter
2017-10-22 00:50:02
phipli
damn fast with the right mosfets
2017-10-22 00:50:58
pcw_home
Yeah if they are just series MOSFETS, they are fast (but not buffered)
2017-10-22 00:51:33
phipli
in the context that we were level shifting on a SBC though
2017-10-22 00:51:43
pcw_home
Thats what we typically use for 5V tolerance on FPGA pins
2017-10-22 00:52:13
pcw_home
There are actual bidirectional buffered devices but they are pretty poor
2017-10-22 00:52:33
phipli
yeah - technically 1 mosfet and 2 resistors per line is good
2017-10-22 00:52:47
phipli
especially when you can often use built in pull-ups on at least one side
2017-10-22 00:53:21

woo, just validated machining a design larger than my X axis by using an physical reference corner + spacer block then moving the non-fitting portion of the designs gcode. Almost double the X capability with a little tinkering :D

2 motors on one axis?
2017-10-22 06:34:58

seems to be 2 approaches, begin with an extra axis - like xyza, or just start with xyz and duplicate one joint

come back gloops :X
2017-10-22 06:54:39
MarcelineVQ
gloops: it looks like you can't just pick XXYZ or something, at least with the release version I have, but when picking XYZA the next screen after that there's pin setup so you can set 4 pins to be x dir + x step instead of 2 pins
2017-10-22 06:55:02
MarcelineVQ
dunno if that works in that fashion but it could be worth trying
2017-10-22 06:55:50
gloops
right thanks will look at that now, that would be easier
2017-10-22 06:59:45
gloops
that was way too simple lol

MarcelineVQ
hopefully it does what you're after hehe

gloops
suspect there could be homing issues that but will see
2017-10-22 07:00:34
MarcelineVQ
if one motor misses steps and the other doesn't it can be an issue I foresee, but it would be anyway without position feedback
2017-10-22 07:03:50
MarcelineVQ
appearantly the other method to handle this situation in kinematics, but it doesn't look as straightforward
2017-10-22 07:03:58
MarcelineVQ
*is kinematics
2017-10-22 07:04:58
gloops
yeah seems so, in the sim where X and A are using X step/dir - X jogs but A doesnt respond
2017-10-22 07:08:34
MarcelineVQ
try selecting XYZ instead so A's setup step isn't involved. just to check, you are changing pin 8 and pin 9 to also be x step and x dir in the pins page?
2017-10-22 07:09:49
MarcelineVQ
8 / 9 happen to be where A step / A dir is by default, hopefully it's similar for you
2017-10-22 07:10:06
gloops
yeah did change the pins to x step
2017-10-22 07:10:26
MarcelineVQ
step and dir? :>
2017-10-22 07:11:01
gloops
yes both, will double check - will try xyz setup as well
2017-10-22 07:11:04
MarcelineVQ
hehe ok
2017-10-22 07:12:00
MarcelineVQ
it does seem to be the reccomended option, at least as of 2012 :X https://forum.linuxcnc.org/38-general-linuxcnc-questions/24458-configurate-slave-axis?limit=6&limitstart=0
2017-10-22 07:12:27

2017-10-22 07:14:46
gloops
will read that as well thanks, it is no problem at the moment ill just keep having a look and reading a bit here and there, doesnt matter if it takes a couple weeks for me to figure out
2017-10-22 07:22:20
gloops
everyone there seems to be saying the xyza way should work, maybe i should just ignore the A altogether once set up
2017-10-22 07:22:54
gloops
ill add a motor to the running machine ive got and see if i can get it spinning using that way
2017-10-22 07:23:51
MarcelineVQ
you should ignore the A yes, when you set the A's pins to X you're saying these pins are X's now, A won't be able to move because it doesn't have pins anymore
2017-10-22 07:24:15
MarcelineVQ
At least, physically it won't be able to move, dunno if that translates to sim
2017-10-22 07:31:18
gloops
yes right, the problems arise if ever motor A gets out of step with the original motor X
2017-10-22 07:31:46
gloops
loses steps or wracking
2017-10-22 07:32:56
MarcelineVQ
yes it could cause a bit of torsion in the gantry
2017-10-22 07:33:18
gloops
and out of square
2017-10-22 07:33:52
gloops
you can only home X
2017-10-22 07:34:18
MarcelineVQ
yeah that's an issue as well, you lose independant motor control for corrections
2017-10-22 07:35:15
gloops
kniematics looks like a fair bit of knowledge to take in haha, maybe 2 weeks isnt enough, ive got a month easy anyway
2017-10-22 07:38:23
MarcelineVQ
kinematics would let you designate each motor travel as seperate 'joints' and map them to one axis, specifically http://linuxcnc.org/docs/html/man/man9/gantrykins.9.html
2017-10-22 07:38:34
MarcelineVQ
that's all I know about it though at this point
2017-10-22 07:43:38
gloops
yeah, that is basically what im wanting atm, just a general idea of what im trying to achieve, i need to get the concept of axis and joints as linuxcnc sees them in my head
2017-10-22 07:44:31
gloops
that is it - gantrykins
2017-10-22 07:45:24
gloops
this wasnt avaialble in older versions i dont think - which makes reading older forum posts a bit confusing - they couldnt do it
2017-10-22 07:45:44
gloops
or not without some coding anyway
2017-10-22 07:46:58
MarcelineVQ
hmm, there's also http://linuxcnc.org/docs/2.7/html/man/man9/gantry.9.html it seems
2017-10-22 07:47:10
MarcelineVQ
either way it looks like we've got to learn all about HAL, which is fine
2017-10-22 07:49:35

2017-10-22 08:02:40

one of my earlier complaints about the docs was that they were not easy to understand - i think thats because a certain degree of basic knowledge is required to understand anything about cnc

imagine a gantry that ran around a circle, as a radius, sweeping like a clock finger
2017-10-22 08:45:39
XXCoder
such machine exists. not quite as you imaged
2017-10-22 08:46:07
gloops
there are 2 motors on the gantry, one near the centre and one near the perimeter of the circle or radius
2017-10-22 08:47:06
gloops
the motors would need to rotate at different speeds to drive this single axis, this highlights the difference between axis and joints
2017-10-22 08:47:16
gloops
does it XXCoder?
2017-10-22 08:47:33

2017-10-22 10:05:33

well actually, making blanks for molds in cnc router is a good idea, as there are no undercuts, you have guaranteed draft built in
2017-10-22 10:05:54

you cut the model you want in wood - not the mold
