id like to have a look at one of these routers now, to compare it to my idea of what a router needs to be

just looking at a pic id say hopelessly inadequate, surprising though with the bracing and so on, could be up to the job

only problem i had with the parameters was the setting for pwn, it was set for 5v signal, i was using 10v, pretty obscure information in the 'manual'
2018-01-18 10:18:44

Yea, the manuals for the Emerson and Hitichi are hundreds of pages hahaha

jt one of interesting things you could is make egg cnc, it draws on egg with cnc machine
2018-01-18 11:55:42
XXCoder
you have plenty of junk cnc parts im sure lol
2018-01-18 11:55:50
jthornton
yup
2018-01-18 11:55:58
XXCoder
https://egg-bot.com/
2018-01-18 11:56:41
jthornton
first you need to laser scan the egg to get the shape
2018-01-18 11:57:00
XXCoder
eggbot dont need that
2018-01-18 12:01:09
SpeedEvil
just approach until the pen touches
2018-01-18 12:01:20
XXCoder
or just use servo with spring
2018-01-18 12:01:30
XXCoder
then it doesnt care if egg is little bigger or smaller
2018-01-18 12:01:42
SpeedEvil
yeah - doesnt need sensing
2018-01-18 12:02:02
XXCoder
eggbot uses 2 pancake nema17s and one servo
2018-01-18 12:07:22
SpeedEvil
Now, work out how to make it for $5 and rapidly shell boiled eggs

I wonder how good my mouse is lol
2018-01-18 12:16:15
XXCoder
its kinda brilliant when you think about it
2018-01-18 12:16:28
XXCoder
you cant repeat it with human as factor
2018-01-18 12:16:42
XXCoder
but cnc no problem! cant pin issue on human, just mouse.
2018-01-18 12:16:49
SpeedEvil
You can in a way that you don't actually care at all
2018-01-18 12:16:53
SpeedEvil
and is more relevant
2018-01-18 12:17:17
XXCoder
human factors would be how it feels, how easy it is to use, so on
2018-01-18 12:17:30
XXCoder

2018-01-18 12:17:44

Put a couple of bits of wood down in a right angle, fixed, and then move the mouse around, occasionally putting it into the corner for drift
2018-01-18 12:18:04
XXCoder
mouse rotation would cause distance changes
2018-01-18 12:18:13
XXCoder
its not eprfectly round after akk
2018-01-18 12:18:22
SpeedEvil
hmm
2018-01-18 12:31:18
SpeedEvil
I'm not completely sure his clamping solution is not rotational
2018-01-18 12:32:10
XXCoder
dunno, though as long as it dont rotate post-clamp its fine I think
2018-01-18 12:32:50
SpeedEvil
those sorts of clamps aren't very rigid, and the small force may induce rotations
2018-01-18 12:33:47
XXCoder
possible
2018-01-18 12:33:53
XXCoder
though with force so littlke
2018-01-18 12:34:15
XXCoder
dunno. it may indeed cause it to draft just enough
2018-01-18 12:51:01
jthornton
I guess I need to add fix the water heater to my list
2018-01-18 13:55:07

Now crack open thi 400 page manual andtry and learn how to set this drive up to freq input
2018-01-18 13:59:24

you sure that 400 page book is not just index for rest of manual? ;)
2018-01-18 14:08:27
gloops
well, 2 screws on X, i can send the gantry along by turning one screw, the other side rotates with it /me chalks 'thats it' under the screw affair

this thing is for surveyors tho
2018-01-18 15:02:11
archivist
yup was going to re-case for machine measuring and see how accurate they are
2018-01-18 15:03:05
sync
the main problem is that they are quite small
2018-01-18 15:03:16
archivist
considering the distances are much larger for surveying, they should be reasonable for machine use
2018-01-18 15:04:08
sync
yeah I wondered about that
2018-01-18 15:04:18
archivist
the entry hole of a HP optical square is probably smaller than those
2018-01-18 15:05:20
sync
yes, but those are made for interferometers
2018-01-18 15:05:25
sync
and not for autocollimators
2018-01-18 15:08:38
archivist
often different markets command differing prices for similar accuracy
2018-01-18 15:09:02
archivist
sellers like to hide that
2018-01-18 15:09:53
sync
I have one of those hp squares and it is quite useless for use with an autocollimator
2018-01-18 15:09:58
sync
the aperture is just too small

slipalong, belville washers are often used
2018-01-18 15:12:43
slipalong_
Im using a MT3 collet so do you think I will get away with using a strong coil spring.
2018-01-18 15:12:59
slipalong_
Im having trouble sourcing the belleville washers
2018-01-18 15:13:14

should be easy to find
2018-01-18 15:13:23

2018-01-18 15:14:28

the autocollimator insert looks like this
2018-01-18 15:14:58
sync
I need to get a second alighment telescope and make the autocollimator insert
2018-01-18 15:16:07
archivist
some of the autocollimators are one axis some two, and there are lower grade versions called angle dekkor
2018-01-18 15:16:24
archivist
minefield
2018-01-18 15:17:12
archivist
slipalong_, something like that yes, I got some direct from the uk maker many years ago
2018-01-18 15:17:43

wanted to put a couple of tons on a paper roller
2018-01-18 15:18:27

nah, with the MAT you can't really go wrong
2018-01-18 15:18:34
sync
as there is only a metric and non metric version
2018-01-18 15:18:47
slipalong_
Ive found a supplier, but not sure which ones to ask for.
2018-01-18 15:18:54
sync
pretty happy that I got a sweep square
2018-01-18 15:19:35
archivist
depends on spring rate(dia, thickness) needed and distance to compress(how many)
2018-01-18 15:20:18
slipalong_
Its a MT3 collet so 3 mm should so it.
2018-01-18 15:21:11
archivist
collets dont usually have the right button to pull in unless you are adding that
2018-01-18 15:21:19
slipalong_
so if each compresses .5mm then I need 6
2018-01-18 15:22:04
archivist
usually you compress a lot less each, more washers
2018-01-18 15:22:05
slipalong_
Im adding a phnumatic ram on top
2018-01-18 15:22:17
IchGucksLive
hi from germany
2018-01-18 15:22:22
slipalong_
ah ok
2018-01-18 15:22:44
slipalong_
so I will go for 12
2018-01-18 15:23:51
slipalong_
so I need to work out how much force I will get out of a 4" ram with 100psi air supply
2018-01-18 15:24:12
slipalong_
then get the apropriate washers
2018-01-18 15:24:19
archivist
just counted 40 ish pairs in something here
2018-01-18 15:24:36
slipalong_
so that move .5 mm each
2018-01-18 15:25:06
archivist
you are unlikely to get that much movement each washer
2018-01-18 15:25:18
slipalong_
40 would be a lot of hight to add to the top of a spindle
2018-01-18 15:25:34
slipalong_
spinning at 6000 rpm
2018-01-18 15:25:36

my dust collector is 1hp and it can't keep up with my planer, and sometimes not with my table saw
2018-01-19 05:48:35
SpeedEvil
what thickness of hose do you have back to the collector?
2018-01-19 05:48:37
roycroft
if i ever start getting caught up on expenses i'm going to get a 2hp one
2018-01-19 05:48:42

4"

2018-01-19 05:49:30
roycroft
i have a 0.5µ top bag on the collector
2018-01-19 05:49:39
roycroft
that's part of the problem
2018-01-19 05:50:08
roycroft
and it's a bag, not a pleated filter
2018-01-19 05:50:20
roycroft
whenever i get a 2hp one i'll put a pleated filter on it
2018-01-19 05:50:22

any plans to switch Linux distros with lCNC?
2018-01-19 06:10:38

May need to find me a 3phase band saw and just use this Hitachi VFD on it and Spring for an Emmerson
2018-01-19 06:10:44

because wheezy's duckis slated to walk off into the sunset in a few months

pfred1 me? no i tried running it on mint, the kernels got crossed, that might well be me not knowing what i was doing though

2018-01-19 06:11:49

ah so they moved forward with Debian
2018-01-19 06:12:27
Contract_Pilot
Path Pilot is Linuxcnc Based Running on Mint
2018-01-19 06:12:48
pfred1
I never found Mint to be particularly quality
2018-01-19 06:13:22
pfred1
I had a laptop that ran it once and it would randomly lock up occasionally
2018-01-19 06:13:49
pfred1
plus the install was sort of buggered right off the get go
2018-01-19 06:13:50
gloops
i never have many problems with mint, i dont do anything demanding though on it
2018-01-19 06:14:13
pfred1
somehow they managed ot hard code the CD path into the install
2018-01-19 06:14:15
Contract_Pilot
not sure why tormach does not just make a package and put ot on a repo
2018-01-19 06:14:40
pfred1
so even though the install would boot off USB it couldn't install with the image on USB
2018-01-19 06:15:03
pfred1
which I thought was just stupid
2018-01-19 06:15:04
gloops
you can get the 2.8 lcnc from the repository, installs as an update, its better if youre doing more than xyz with 1 motor on each
2018-01-19 06:15:05

Yep, looking for a CD drive

then i move on to somthing else and forget it.
2018-01-19 06:16:26
pfred1
yeah it was quite some time ago I had that problem they've probably fixed it by now
2018-01-19 06:16:55
pfred1
toda yI got my first custom kernel to boot first time
2018-01-19 06:17:05

I never did that before
2018-01-19 06:17:15
pfred1
I always forget something
2018-01-19 06:17:34

this time though it fired right up
2018-01-19 06:17:40

i dont know there are some pretty good apps for linux, gimp is on par with photoshop

2018-01-19 06:19:44

2018-01-19 06:19:54

CAM is a weak spot yes, heekscnc was working towards it, seems freecad could be the best hope or blendercam - which no-one uses
2018-01-19 06:21:07
pfred1
yeah I use freecad but my copy is really buggy
2018-01-19 06:21:47
pfred1
I don't have the best dependencies for it

open source often has a problem integrating applications
2018-01-19 06:23:40
pfred1
you don't have so many software suites as you do jumbles of programs
2018-01-19 06:24:27
pfred1
which is the UNIX way but it can also make things inaccessible too
2018-01-19 06:24:32
gloops
yeah, it seems a lot of people script something very specific for a task theyre working on, it really needs the knowledge pooling and one app building to do all
2018-01-19 06:25:07
pfred1
like yesterday configuring my kernel I found this command line and it is clever as hell
2018-01-19 06:25:21

but I never came up with it myself
2018-01-19 06:25:49
pfred1
I need to use xargs more often
2018-01-19 06:26:42
pfred1
find -name Makefile | xargs grep soundcore
2018-01-19 06:27:20
pfred1
that filters every makefile for the string soundcore
2018-01-19 06:27:29

yeah I'm kind of leaning toward the ideology that that shared libraries should be kept to a bare minimum of carefully tested stable code that must be shared in order to support inter-application compatibility. Otherwise, all the code a project needs should be included in the source tree. When you compile it, you got what you need. If you want to build it static then you get a binary that'll run almost anywhere.
2018-01-19 07:00:48
jesseg
Sure, it takes up more disk space. But really. You can't even buy a hard drive under half a terabyte now :P
2018-01-19 07:01:23
pfred1
oh I've had some fights with shared objects
2018-01-19 07:01:50
jesseg
I hate dependency hell personally :P Of course I'm a bitter slackware user LOL
2018-01-19 07:02:02
pfred1
I ran Slackware for a long time
2018-01-19 07:02:12
pfred1
it made me really appreciate package management
2018-01-19 07:02:37
pfred1
I ran Slack from 3 to 8
2018-01-19 07:02:53

if you love pain then Gentoo might have something for you
2018-01-19 07:05:47
pfred1
it's like Linux From Scratch
2018-01-19 07:05:57
jesseg
yeah I tried out gentoo long time ago. At the time I had dialup and downloading all those sources was just not working for me LOL
2018-01-19 07:06:04
jesseg
I've heard it's a lot better nowdays too
2018-01-19 07:06:39

I ran Gentoo qu8ite a few years ago and I don't know if I'd call what I'm going through now better
2018-01-19 07:06:55
jesseg
but I have a love hate relationship with package managers. They sure make things easy when they work. But when they break, it can be a bloody mess. I'm not smart enough to deal with that, so I still prefer slackware :P
2018-01-19 07:07:22
pfred1
I've experienced very little breakage
2018-01-19 07:07:38
pfred1
I vaguely remembr having to rebuilt an apt database once
2018-01-19 07:07:53

but it was only once and it was so long ago
2018-01-19 07:07:53
jesseg
yeah most of the time they work great. But sometimes the deep magic leaks out :P
2018-01-19 07:08:09
pfred1
I've heard a lot of horror stories about gentoo
2018-01-19 07:08:41
pfred1
but I just started running it
2018-01-19 07:09:06
pfred1
heck I'm lost in it so far
2018-01-19 07:09:55
pfred1
I just got the basic install done and got a custom kernel compiled i haven't even fired up the desktop yet
2018-01-19 07:10:12

hihi. I had the first "brake check" since i got my license 15 years ago yesterday on the commute home... some guy in a toyota aygo was seemingly angry that i didnt let him filter in at the end of a freeway, so he filtered in behind me, overtook on the right afterwards (forbidden in germany), then got back in front of me and slammed the brakes hard... I only thought "Try it, make my day! Your

2018-01-19 07:35:57

btw it is also illegal to block merging. :)
2018-01-19 07:35:58
Loetmichel
nope, in germany that would be fun in court. he would get 100% of the blame and his insurance would get back my cars damages from him.
2018-01-19 07:36:06
XXCoder
in usa anyway
2018-01-19 07:37:00
Loetmichel
XXCoder: i didnt. there was simply no room in front of me. I am NOT obligated to slam the brakes to let someone in. and he could have merged behind me, there was plenty of space
2018-01-19 07:37:22

2018-01-19 07:40:47

so i was close to the car in front of my, about 2 cars lengths

thats not bad
2018-01-19 07:41:13

Loetmichel
he could have forced his way in there, but i think he wasnt bold enough
2018-01-19 07:43:39
Loetmichel
instead he drove the entire 300m or so of white line crossed "disappearing lane" aside me, then slammed the brakes hard when the barrier came up in front of him and got in behind me

XXCoder
gee
2018-01-19 07:44:18

2018-01-19 15:11:23

i dont think theres much risk from a safety point of view it will trip the circuit board
2018-01-19 15:20:37
gloops
well, i was going to leave the z until id seen the x and y work, i think ill do it now, need some screw bearings making and fitting
2018-01-19 15:23:28
enleth
gloops: the risk with bad earthing is precisely that it *won't* trip the breaker until it's too late
2018-01-19 15:26:24
enleth
a metal enclosure hanging off a wooden wall can become electrified if its earthing connection fails and the breaker most likely will do nothing *until* you touch it
2018-01-19 15:27:21
enleth
at which point it will only trip *after* your body has become a short circut capable of carrying whatever the breaker is rated to
2018-01-19 15:27:32
enleth
i.e. a smoky crisp
2018-01-19 15:28:41
enleth
generally circut breakers do absolutely nothing to prevent electrocution, they're for fire prevention
2018-01-19 15:29:19
gloops
ok, im not arguing or anything, i know very little about electrics, but say i have a psu screwed to the cabinet, the psu is plugged in to the mains and earthed - wont that make an earth in that scenario?
2018-01-19 15:29:29
archivist
yes
2018-01-19 15:29:30
enleth
preventing electrocution is done by proper earthing and GFCI devices
2018-01-19 15:29:38
enleth
yes, it will
2018-01-19 15:30:12
enleth
it just sounded like you were considering additional earthing for the cabinet itself
2018-01-19 15:30:12
Roguish
typical circuit breaker is way to slow to prevent electrocution. and breakers are generally only rated for a single 'trip', after that no guarentee
2018-01-19 15:30:15
archivist
UK generally has good safe electrical circuits
2018-01-19 15:32:01

2018-01-19 15:32:16
gloops
i will earth the cabinet as well, ill have a look to see what looks the best way
2018-01-19 15:32:45
enleth
Roguish: this sounds contrary to the whole point of having breakers instead of fuses
2018-01-19 15:34:26
Roguish
enleth: I took a couple of classes at a local jr. college on the US electrical code. instructor is a local inspector, and is on a couple of the national code committees. that's what he told the class. pretty knowledgable so I'll take his word on it.
2018-01-19 15:36:08
enleth
Roguish: shame he didn't elaborate, it would be interesting to know which type of breakers he's seen behaving badly, whether he meant short circuit or overcurrent trip, what was the failure mode afterwards, etc.
2018-01-19 15:36:15
enleth
without all this data, it's an anecdote
2018-01-19 15:36:25
archivist
earth leakage breaker gets a regular test here, so one time use is plain silly
2018-01-19 15:36:33
enleth
it might've been true for a given set of circumstances, but we don't know those now
2018-01-19 15:37:10
enleth
Roguish: remember that a typical breaker is actually two completely separate devices operating a shared contact - a solenoid and a thermostat
2018-01-19 15:37:29
Roguish
enleth: not that the breakers won't function, just that all they are warranteed for by the mfgr.
2018-01-19 15:37:45
enleth

2018-01-19 15:38:25

2018-01-19 15:38:36

i believe two pole breakers have two solenoids
2018-01-19 15:38:43
roycroft
would they also have two thermostats?
2018-01-19 15:38:59
roycroft
i've seen 2 pole breakers trip one pole but not the other
2018-01-19 15:39:20
archivist
mechanical link here, that is impossible
2018-01-19 15:39:46
roycroft
most modern ones here have a pin that links the two poles
2018-01-19 15:39:47
enleth
roycroft: if the schematic on it says that it has, then it has; a typical generic two pole breaker should
2018-01-19 15:40:04
roycroft
but old ones have a clip, and if the clip is worn or loose, it won't always pull the other pole off
2018-01-19 15:40:20
enleth
ah, that's a separate issue
2018-01-19 15:40:47
enleth
so if the two poles are phase and neutral of the same circuit, there most likely are two separate thermostats in it, but they might not be perfectly matched
2018-01-19 15:40:49
roycroft
the linkage is the actuater levers, not anything internal

2018-01-19 15:43:14
Roguish
yeah. some modifiy. US code and international are getting closer.
2018-01-19 15:43:27
roycroft
being long, complicated, convoluted, and confusing makes for job security for them that manage the code
2018-01-19 15:43:51
archivist
in the 15th ed we had all exposed metal shall be grounded, so idiots were grounding hat pegs
2018-01-19 15:44:09
Roguish
i'm a mechanical, which is why i took the code class. class didn't even try to teach the entire code, just what's in it and where and how to find it.
2018-01-19 15:44:33
enleth
roycroft: as for your original question - unless you have some kind of a very special purpose device, I'm pretty sure every unit with a solenoid for short circuit detection would also have a thermostat for overload detection
2018-01-19 15:44:38
roycroft
the rule of thumb is: when in doubt, ask the inspector
2018-01-19 15:44:46
roycroft
and then be sure to get that same inspector to do the final sign-off
2018-01-19 15:44:57
Roguish
roycroft: that's the truth.
2018-01-19 15:45:07
enleth
roycroft: I can't even imagine a valid purpose for a two-pole device with a full set on one side and just one of the two on the other
2018-01-19 15:45:27
roycroft
i'd assume they would be two independent devices ganged together
2018-01-19 15:45:32
Rab
I know breakers can wear out over time, and I suppose the wear mechanism is heat from current flow. By nature, an overcurrent event stresses the breaker to an unpredictable degree and could degrade its characteristics.
2018-01-19 15:45:39
roycroft
but assumptions often prove incorrect
2018-01-19 15:46:09
Rab
So I can see that the only perfect breaker is one which hasn't been tripped.
2018-01-19 15:46:49
roycroft
in order to certify it as "perfect" it would have to be tested, would it not?
2018-01-19 15:46:53
Rab
There is also contact wear from tripping, of course.
2018-01-19 15:47:03
Rab
roycroft, one would hope.
2018-01-19 15:47:16
roycroft
and the testing would trip it
2018-01-19 15:47:20
enleth
Rab: if the overcurrent was below the rated amount (6kA for most small devices where I live), it must not degrade it to an "unpredictable" degree, it must still be within the rated amount of cycles, which goes into thousands
2018-01-19 15:47:22
roycroft
that would be part of the test, i should hope
2018-01-19 15:47:36
roycroft
that being the case, there can be no such thing as a perfect breaker
2018-01-19 15:47:53
roycroft
according to your rationale
2018-01-19 15:48:18
roycroft
the very act of certifying its perfection renders it imperfect
2018-01-19 15:48:40
roycroft
all breakers are imperfect
2018-01-19 15:48:44
roycroft
we're doomed!
2018-01-19 15:48:44
archivist
they must work to a standard for a number of cycles
2018-01-19 15:49:09
roycroft
the duty cycle of a typical circuit breaker is not all that great
2018-01-19 15:49:24
roycroft
which is why i'm not a fan of using a breaker as a primary cutoff for equipment
2018-01-19 15:49:32
enleth
those things really are just a spring-loaded SPST switch, a solenoid wound with some seriously thick enamel wire, and a bimetal thermostat
2018-01-19 15:49:46
enleth
all three of those are simple devices that are easy to make to a given spec
2018-01-19 15:50:16
Rab
enleth, the given spec being "as cheaply as possible".
2018-01-19 15:50:33
roycroft
better to have a mains cutoff switch (preferably with lockout capability) located near the equipment
2018-01-19 15:51:34
Rab
roycroft, agreed, and preferably a contactor on the equipment itself.
2018-01-19 15:51:44
roycroft
yes
2018-01-19 15:52:39
Rab
It's all kinda academic. Breakers last for many decades, some longer than others. I'm just trying to construct an explanation which addresses Roguish's anecdote.
2018-01-19 15:53:59
enleth
still doesn't fly, if it's to be taken at face value - absolutely no one in their right mind will replace a breaker after just *one* trip
2018-01-19 15:54:33
enleth
(assuming it was within the spec for surge current)
2018-01-19 15:54:35
roycroft

and when electricity was not well enough understood and so feared that anything electrical tended to be way way way overbuilt
2018-01-19 15:58:49

that mindset is still carried over to a lot of safety labels, without being given a single thought
2018-01-19 15:59:47

around here, labels to the effect of "DO NOT TOUCH, ELECTRICAL DEVICE" are common place on junction boxes, access panels for street lamps, etc.

2018-01-19 18:34:52
gloops
you were right about the grubscrews, i tried both pulleys up with belt on - its no nothing to turn the screw, no resistance at all, so pulleys wont take much holding on
2018-01-19 18:37:01
Tom_L
that's what i'm going with until something causes me to change
2018-01-19 18:39:14
gloops
well, that is with no cutting or momentum - i think the pulleys will be ok with screws though, the chain drive one i made was totally different, to move the gantry you had to put some force on the drive sprocket - a lot
2018-01-19 18:39:45

mine are on Z so i think they'll be ok

i dont really know with steel, some have really fine screw pitch 2mm, and use 120 oz motors without any problem, i think your motors should be ok with 5mm screws
2018-01-19 18:57:39

2mm would have to have pretty fine ballbearings

knowing your expectation is essential
2018-01-19 19:46:30
gloops
probably max speed of my motors is 600 rpm, 2.5 - 1 gearing, 5mm pitch screws should permit about 7500mm/min
2018-01-19 19:47:21
gloops
screw resonance could well restrict that, and factors as you say, acceleration, probably a good bit lower useable speeds
2018-01-19 20:16:48

`Wolf, what pitch are your leadscrews?

gloops
fragalot youll have to start building soon, Tom and me will soon be finished i dont think theres anyone else in here making anything from scratch
2018-01-20 07:21:53
roycroft
i'm making a router table at the moment
2018-01-20 07:22:03
roycroft
and as soon as that's done i'll be making a belt grinder
2018-01-20 07:22:11
roycroft
neither will be cnc controlled though
2018-01-20 07:22:38
roycroft
but both are being made from scratch
2018-01-20 07:22:44
gloops
well was mainly thinking of cnc roy, but yes looking forward to seeing your router, it sounds rather high end
2018-01-20 07:23:39
roycroft
after those projects i want to get back to my mill/drill and finally finish the cnc conversion of that
2018-01-20 07:23:51
roycroft
i have everything except the ball screws for that
2018-01-20 07:25:02
gloops
i will either be extending or making a new bandsaw from an old one, to get 12 inch or more cut, but got enough to do atm
2018-01-20 07:26:23
gloops
would be interesting to see how one of these granite cast jobs goes though like fragalot is considering
2018-01-20 07:27:44
roycroft
i'm still up in the air about adding some mass to the mill/drill with granite epoxy
2018-01-20 07:28:45
roycroft
adding 100kg or so would definitely help
2018-01-20 07:29:26
gloops
suppose any resin - GRP , or event cement concrete would be ok for adding mass
2018-01-20 07:30:12
roycroft
a lot of people have added granite epoxy to small machines with good success
2018-01-20 07:30:27
gloops
yeah seems a popular thing to do
2018-01-20 07:30:43
roycroft
it's relatively cheap, with a big payback
2018-01-20 07:30:45
gloops
expoxy probably stiffer
2018-01-20 07:30:50
gloops
epoxy
2018-01-20 07:46:20
fragalot
Hallo
2018-01-20 07:46:31
fragalot
there is no substitute for mass, roycroft
2018-01-20 07:47:29
fragalot
gloops: Well you'll just have to wait :D (the cnc isn't /that/ high on the priority list; so i'm working on the design in between)
2018-01-20 07:48:32
fragalot
gloops: also - epoxy granite is not only stiffer, but it deals with vibrations a lot better than cement, which would just vibrate to bits
2018-01-20 07:49:34
gloops
if the objective is only to add mass that wouldnt really matter, filling hollow sections with sand would achieve that - if you could get it in
2018-01-20 07:50:09
fragalot
if you can get it to stay in
2018-01-20 07:50:36
fragalot
and stay attached to the top walls
2018-01-20 07:51:28
roycroft
for the mill/drill dampening vibration is important
2018-01-20 07:51:43
SpeedEvil
pitch
2018-01-20 07:51:46
roycroft
my mill/drill is bolted down to a stand i built for it
2018-01-20 07:51:54
roycroft
and i filled the stand tubing with sand
2018-01-20 07:54:36
gloops
roofers resin is probably the cheapest, add stone chips
2018-01-20 07:55:31
gloops
im not sure though how filling hollow steel with resin could cause distortion, some heat and contraction going on
2018-01-20 07:56:15
fragalot
and it's difficult to cast through narrow areas anyhow
2018-01-20 07:56:46
fragalot
if it's to fillt he voids in open bottom base; EG is great
2018-01-20 07:56:53
fragalot
if it's to fill tubing.. sand
2018-01-20 08:00:58

half a tonne of steel welded and bolted, triangulated, bolted to the floor, and the gantry moves by applying the lightest pressure to the screw, like turning the sound knob up on a car radio

gloops
seems crazy
2018-01-20 08:10:31

yeah and can also make it show
2018-01-20 09:49:53

ghah adjusting joints in fusion360 is absolute garbage
2018-01-20 09:51:30

gloops

I want to put a few spacers on the Z to give clearance for the ballscrew nut
2018-01-20 09:56:05

the second I touch that joint to either remove or modify it, the whole thing explodes
2018-01-20 09:56:49

http://a360.co/2BgRhAb that's it at the moment, prior to exploding
2018-01-20 09:57:44

ajd I tried adjusting the X axis casting inserts, but good god that was a mistake
2018-01-20 09:57:58

ive got the tube in the lathe and i still dont know how im going to make it lol
2018-01-20 09:58:22

good luck spotting collissions too on paper
2018-01-20 10:04:50

you dont need much/any drawing to work direct from inside rear of skull
2018-01-20 10:05:11
fragalot
archivist: Your words are wasted on me on this subject.
2018-01-20 10:05:19
gloops
dont plan anything, have faith!
2018-01-20 10:05:19
fragalot
I too come from the age of drawing everything on paper
2018-01-20 10:05:28
fragalot
but if you have access to a 3D cad application, and you know how to use it
2018-01-20 10:05:32
fragalot
you just are not going to go back to paper
2018-01-20 10:05:40

I have done clocks in solidworks
2018-01-20 10:07:13
gloops
thats why i waited until everything was here before i started, i like to lay things out and see how they fit etc, its just how my mind works
2018-01-20 10:07:21
gloops
im not happy until ive done that
2018-01-20 10:07:50
enleth
archivist: you're right when it comes to an artisan metalworker working alone or in a small team of equals, doing everything from design to assembly, on a project that is within the capabilities of his own shop and maybe a foundry down the road, but it looks like the time of big, complex machines and grand projects being done that way seem to be long gone
2018-01-20 10:08:00
gloops
you build a mental map of what youre going to do
2018-01-20 10:09:25
archivist
mental map is here to stay even in the computer age
2018-01-20 10:09:25
fragalot
gloops: I have all the bits here too
2018-01-20 10:09:42
fragalot
but I still like to create a mold design as I plan to only cast 1 set
2018-01-20 10:09:43
fragalot
hopefully
2018-01-20 10:09:54
fragalot
archivist: the mental map is of course still there
2018-01-20 10:10:02
gloops
well should be able to slip housings on bearings and lay them out on some plates, see whats what
2018-01-20 10:10:05
fragalot
but even so you will always want to adjust that one little thing that pushes everything over
2018-01-20 10:10:06
enleth
sure, first nuclear power plants, first space rockets, first particle accelerators, they were all designed on paper, with computers relegated to checking models and crude simulations
2018-01-20 10:10:11
fragalot
at which point, paper is absolute ass
2018-01-20 10:10:20
enleth
but the cost was enormous for the overhead and no one in a business is going to take it now
2018-01-20 10:10:49
archivist
fragalot, for an anti vibration design, you have the frame right but your axes plates are resonant
2018-01-20 10:11:14
fragalot
archivist: I'm open to suggestions?
2018-01-20 10:12:06
gloops
these days someone in australia draws a component for something being made in france, will never see the engine or whatever it is, Indian creates a g code file from it, russian makes the part, chinese finishes it, france bolts it on
2018-01-20 10:15:40
archivist
fragalot, imagine audio exciting a plate with sand on it, your spindle does that to Z plates
2018-01-20 10:16:12
archivist
I have a conference article on machine vibration here
2018-01-20 10:18:19
archivist
dunno if this is on the web: Identification and solution of machine tools chatter problems B.R. Hardwick
2018-01-20 10:20:28
fragalot
there are some articles linking to that talking about active vibration control
2018-01-20 10:20:35
fragalot
but that's not what i'm after
2018-01-20 10:21:11
fragalot
the only 2 ways I can think of to reduce this issue would be to either figure out the resonant frequenties of this assembly & adjust according, or to add mass in a damping material
2018-01-20 10:21:31
archivist
they mention stiffening and damping
2018-01-20 10:22:28
fragalot
but the stiffening should be done over the entire surface to have the best effect shouldn't it
2018-01-20 10:22:42

:P
2018-01-20 10:23:35
archivist
what thickness are your plates for Z
2018-01-20 10:23:54
fragalot
the Z is currently 20mm as I planned to buy a full sheet & cut as needed
2018-01-20 10:24:28
fragalot
the X was 2 plates bolted together to make it easier to assemble as the design is poorly thought out :P
2018-01-20 10:27:10
archivist
some damping because 2 sheets
2018-01-20 10:27:50
fragalot
Z will still need minimu 25mm worth of spacing added to it anyway to clear the leadscrew nicely
2018-01-20 10:27:58
fragalot
so that can be bolted plate too

I'm trying freeCAD but it's not quite there yet
2018-01-20 10:45:53

librecad works for 2D
2018-01-20 10:46:26
fragalot
jthornton: when I say both, I mean parametric 3D with the option to export to 2D dimensioned drawings

dont freecad have 2d draft drawing export
2018-01-20 10:47:47

fusion's way of keeping trakc of "history" is driving me insane
2018-01-20 10:47:54
XXCoder
maybe #freecad folks know
2018-01-20 10:48:09
jthornton
yea, I hate that about fusion
2018-01-20 10:49:14
enleth
you can turn it off completely
2018-01-20 10:49:32
fragalot
enleth: yeah but then it's no longer parametric and becomes as useless as sketchup
2018-01-20 10:51:16
enleth
can't say I used it that way but John from NYC CNC said he did sometimes and it looked parametric enough in a video I've seen
2018-01-20 10:51:29
enleth
more solidworks-y I guess
2018-01-20 10:51:37
fragalot
enleth: it is parametric IF you keep the history enabled
2018-01-20 10:51:48
fragalot
but the way it tracks the history is incredibly annoying for larger assemblies
2018-01-20 10:52:21
enleth
well, they could do something about the way it insists on tracking where something was first created
2018-01-20 10:52:24
enleth
for one
2018-01-20 10:52:38
fragalot
that is indeed really annoying
2018-01-20 10:53:14
fragalot
because sometimes if you copy a different instance (copy, paste new), the sketch will get messed up and it loses features
2018-01-20 10:53:26
jthornton
jthornton needs to figure out how to setup an alarm window in a maple systems hmi
2018-01-20 10:53:34
fragalot
that you can't "fix" without messing up everything following that original hole in the history
2018-01-20 10:54:57
fragalot
I do, however, really like the CAM in fusion360
2018-01-20 10:55:29
fragalot
and if it wasn't for the annoyances with how it handles part features, I use it all th etime
2018-01-20 10:56:49
XXCoder
fragalot: I wonder if you could export and import into fusion
2018-01-20 10:57:04
XXCoder
that way you get nice cam but nicer cad elsewhere
2018-01-20 10:57:27
fragalot
you can
2018-01-20 10:57:37
fragalot
it's quite good at importing files, actually
2018-01-20 10:57:59
XXCoder

2018-01-20 10:58:03

2018-01-20 10:59:31
enleth
have you had any success importing complex assemblies from SolidWorks?
2018-01-20 11:00:54

--axis-modal removes the redundant position parameters (--output-doubles was confusing and ambiguous)
2018-01-20 18:00:39

The default mode for the post processor should produce the most explicit code and the flags should remove things to make the file smalle
2018-01-20 18:01:48

Yeah. Anyway - I'll start out with 6.2, I can always up the size - the exact location is not that critical. It is okay if it moves 0.1mm or something
2018-01-20 19:06:27
pfred1
it goes without saying that sharp tools are essential to working in plastic
2018-01-20 19:06:35
miss0r
Indeed
2018-01-20 19:06:56
miss0r
miss0r just unwrapped a brand new carbide drill (not the chinesium ones)
2018-01-20 19:07:14
pfred1
carbide might not be the best choice
2018-01-20 19:07:30
pfred1
you certainly don't need carbide's properties in plastic
2018-01-20 19:07:45
pfred1
and carbide won't take an edge like good HSS will
2018-01-20 19:07:57
miss0r
true, but these laser sharpened ones I get are ridiculously sharp when they are new :)
2018-01-20 19:08:09
pfred1
OK should be fine
2018-01-20 19:08:23
fragalot
fragalot hates websites that have an option to filter certain heights of cabinets but have no "this size or above" function
2018-01-20 19:08:29
pfred1
I always thought it was down to the grain structure of the metal why carbide is never too sharp
2018-01-20 19:08:32
miss0r
I've litteraly cut my fingers on one when feeling for the sharpness
2018-01-20 19:08:32

for some reason I like that sound, I guess it reminds me of when I first moved here and it was something new

I just found a cute little nema11 stepper that I am thinking of getting. But it only puts out 0.09nm. And I am unsure how much I need. It needs to overcome the drag of some axle seals and some motor brushes. Can you guys think up an easy way for me to measure the torque required to turn this axle?

by having an identical lever on the opposite side

pfred1

2018-01-20 21:40:33
fragalot
miss0r: you put the pulley right onto the shaft where you want to measure the release torque
2018-01-20 21:40:55
fragalot
you tie a string around the pulley, and either go over another loose pulley, or go directly vertical if possible
2018-01-20 21:41:05
miss0r
so, no lifting arm, just a pulley, and you calculate the OD of that...
2018-01-20 21:41:09
fragalot
mark location of string going over pulley prior to add weight if needed
2018-01-20 21:41:18
fragalot
add weight until it moves
2018-01-20 21:41:39
fragalot
then use the OD of the pulley on the shaft, and the weight of the part of the string affected by gravity
2018-01-20 21:41:46

Used to define a multi-axis homing sequence HOME ALL and enforce homing order (e.g., Z may not be homed if X is not yet homed). An axis may be homed after all axes with a lower HOME_SEQUENCE have already been homed and are at the HOME_OFFSET. If two axes have the same HOME_SEQUENCE, they may be homed at the same time. If HOME_SEQUENCE is -1 or not specified then this joint will not be homed by the HOME ALL sequence. HOME_SEQUENCE

JT-Shop, the DS3231 has a built in temperature sensor if you want to monitor the temperature in the coop

pfred1
time for a mega
2018-01-20 23:06:57
phipli
it is a mega...
2018-01-20 23:07:04
phipli
an ATMega32
2018-01-20 23:07:28
phipli
proper sized DIP with lots of pins :)
2018-01-20 23:08:06
pfred1
need a mega mega
2018-01-20 23:08:12
phipli
I have an ATMega1284 somewhere
2018-01-20 23:08:19
phipli
they're the same package with a lot more space
2018-01-20 23:08:23
phipli
but they're also expensive
2018-01-20 23:08:25
pfred1
they're only a couple bucks more
2018-01-20 23:08:37
phipli
that's like double the price! :)
2018-01-20 23:08:42
pfred1
the counterfeit ones
2018-01-20 23:09:09
phipli
If I was looking for much more I'd switch to STM32s
2018-01-20 23:09:53
pfred1
dang a 2560 is expensive
2018-01-20 23:10:28
fragalot
phipli: STM32 can actually be cheaper
2018-01-20 23:10:29
pfred1
they want like $9 for them
2018-01-20 23:10:44
Deejay

2018-01-20 23:10:47
fragalot
at least the chip we're using now is cheaper than the PIC we used before :P

i'm off too -- gnite all!

2018-01-20 23:13:49
phipli

2018-01-20 23:14:08

2018-01-20 23:14:14
pfred1
they always got to get you wih that VAT don't they?
2018-01-20 23:14:53

2018-01-20 23:15:07
pfred1
we have no sales tax here at all
2018-01-20 23:15:19

Now, only 1p! (plus £20 postage and £10 tax)
2018-01-20 23:15:30

2018-01-20 23:15:41
pfred1
I live in Delaware
2018-01-20 23:16:58
phipli
if you bought the same thing from somewhere (like element14?) how much would it cost?
2018-01-20 23:17:09
phipli
so, same part - say a STM32F411RE
2018-01-20 23:17:33
JT-Shop
phipli: got the new roll out nest box installed
2018-01-20 23:17:53
pfred1
on google shopping the price varies
2018-01-20 23:17:54
phipli
excellent :)
2018-01-20 23:18:06
pfred1
anywhere from $47 to $13
2018-01-20 23:18:34
JT-Shop
everyday 3 or more would try to fit in a 24" x 12" nest box now they have more room
2018-01-20 23:18:45
phipli
that's more than £8.90 interestingly
2018-01-20 23:18:47
pfred1
I think I'll stick with counterfeit Arduinos
2018-01-20 23:19:02

pfred1 - all about the Pro Micro
2018-01-20 23:19:39

JT-Shop, two of ours used to try to sleep in the same nestbox
2018-01-20 23:19:51
phipli
they looked like someone had poured liquid chicken into a bucket
2018-01-20 23:20:01
JT-Shop
lol
2018-01-20 23:20:22
JT-Shop

2018-01-20 23:21:07
phipli
heh
2018-01-20 23:21:13
phipli
well... it is probably warmer
2018-01-20 23:21:59
phipli
one of ours squishes herself up in the corner so tightly I keep thinking she's missing
2018-01-20 23:23:09
JT-Shop
I need to put some treat trays on the unused roosts to attract them from roosting with the roo
2018-01-20 23:23:37
phipli
Didn't know you had a kangaroo!
2018-01-20 23:24:53
JT-Shop
American slang for rooster lol
2018-01-20 23:27:32
phipli
heh.
2018-01-20 23:27:56
phipli
even at this distance from Australia, 'roo is an abbreviation for kangaroo in the UK
2018-01-20 23:28:50
roycroft
have any of you ever used thread-locking set screws, with the nylon patch on the side of the screw?
2018-01-20 23:29:10
roycroft
roycroft is wondering if they really do hold well in high vibration conditions
2018-01-20 23:29:10
phipli
on the screw? not on the nut?
2018-01-20 23:29:11
JT-Shop
well you guys sent the prisoners over there...
2018-01-20 23:29:43
JT-Shop
I've used them
2018-01-20 23:29:56
roycroft
yes, on the screw
2018-01-20 23:30:00
roycroft
on the side of the screw
2018-01-20 23:30:05
phipli
sent lots of people over there - some (lots) of it very questionable.
2018-01-20 23:30:15
JT-Shop
lol
2018-01-20 23:30:25
roycroft
there are nylon tipped ones, but those are making adjustments without marring the shaft/surface
2018-01-20 23:30:39
roycroft
do they work well, jt-shop?
2018-01-20 23:30:39
phipli
but my folks were mostly busy digging and / or being oppressed over here
2018-01-20 23:30:44
phipli
so didn't notice so much
2018-01-20 23:30:48
JT-Shop
worked for me
2018-01-20 23:31:04
roycroft
they're not that expensive - i might give them a go
2018-01-20 23:31:16
roycroft
i'd rather do that than squirt loctite blue on the screws
2018-01-20 23:32:11
roycroft
phipli: https://www.mcmaster.com/#94495a253/=1b7qnkd

interesting. not seen them
2018-01-20 23:33:07
roycroft
there are more types of set screws than most people imagine
2018-01-20 23:33:10
phipli
we mostly use castellated nuts at work
2018-01-20 23:33:24
phipli
bent beam nuts are about but frowned at
2018-01-20 23:33:47
phipli
nylock... not sure what people's opinion is on them. not seen them in use on a train
2018-01-20 23:34:04
roycroft
nylock nuts are ok for non-critical applications
2018-01-20 23:34:11
phipli
heh
2018-01-20 23:34:16
phipli
you mean non-train applications?
2018-01-20 23:34:37
roycroft
there are other applications that are not trains that are critical
2018-01-20 23:34:45
roycroft
and probably some non-critical applications on trains
2018-01-20 23:35:21
roycroft
if people might die if the nut comes off it's a critical application
2018-01-20 23:35:24

nylocks are used on submarines...
2018-01-20 23:35:46
phipli
how much vibration do you get on subs JT?
2018-01-20 23:35:59
phipli
that is one of the major problems for us
2018-01-20 23:36:05
phipli
everything shakes to bits over time
2018-01-20 23:36:08
JT-Shop
none lol
2018-01-20 23:36:14
roycroft
it depends on where you are in the sub, i should think
2018-01-20 23:36:24
JT-Shop
nylocks resist vibration
2018-01-20 23:36:25
roycroft
if you're in or near the engine room, there could be a fair amount
2018-01-20 23:36:35
roycroft
although submarines are designed to not vibrate a lot
2018-01-20 23:36:40
JT-Shop
sub are quiet
2018-01-20 23:36:41
roycroft
vibration = noise
2018-01-20 23:36:51

and submarines are supposed to be stealthy
2018-01-20 23:36:57
JT-Shop

the rest is done somewhere else
2018-01-20 23:38:54

that's a lot of overhang on the table, seeing it in action, not that it matters so much with the work all being done over the rails anyway

it seems pretty solid
2018-01-21 05:09:20

I guess the ouse is drier

outside is around 35%?
2018-01-21 06:31:30

interesting
2018-01-21 07:08:56
pfred1
they make hydrogen out of natural gas
2018-01-21 07:09:14
pfred1
hydrogen is the hydro in hydrocarbon
2018-01-21 07:09:55
jesseg
umm not to throw water on anyone's bright idea but oxidizing aluminum to liberate hydrogen doesn't return nearly the quantity of energy needed to reduce the aluminum oxide back to metallic aluminum.
2018-01-21 07:10:08
pfred1
hydrogen by itself is a pretty low grade fuel
2018-01-21 07:10:25
jesseg
if that wasn't such a problem, they'd just use sodium hydroxide in water because that produces hydrogen gas with any grade of aluminum :P
2018-01-21 07:10:45
jesseg
but it takes huge amounts of power to convert aluminum oxide to metalic aluminum :D
2018-01-21 07:10:53
pfred1
let's face facts petroleum is a tough act to beat
2018-01-21 07:11:10
jesseg
LOL true dat
2018-01-21 07:11:24
jesseg
especially since it's an energy source.
2018-01-21 07:11:39

that we don't have to first spend more energy than its worth to produce it :P

XXCoder
LOTS about future using known and likely future tech
2018-01-21 07:17:05
gloops
nah i think we need to know more about quantum particles and physics, the solution lies there
2018-01-21 07:17:14
XXCoder
no magic stuff requiring physical trait of square root of -1.
2018-01-21 07:17:26
gloops
only a quantum computer can do the math
2018-01-21 07:17:26
XXCoder
you will love that guy
2018-01-21 07:17:39
pfred1
yeah we're barely past setting stuff on fire today
2018-01-21 07:17:44
pfred1
really not past it
2018-01-21 07:18:03

lemme link one of his videos about far future and dyson

so far the long term prospects for our species do not look good
2018-01-21 07:20:34
MarcelineVQ
but they never do to the current prospector
2018-01-21 07:20:48

*get to
2018-01-21 07:21:19
gloops
when humans become extinct there wont be time for another intelligent species to evolve, the sun will change
2018-01-21 07:21:36
pfred1
we have a pretty stable sun
2018-01-21 07:21:43
gloops
we may be the first and last in the entire cosmos
2018-01-21 07:21:43
XXCoder
actually huge part of first 5 billion is starting at first place
2018-01-21 07:22:00
XXCoder
there was billion or more years of just evoluting multicellear life.
2018-01-21 07:22:12
gloops
pfred it took 3 billion years to get to mankind, there aint that long left in this solar system
2018-01-21 07:22:12
pfred1
nah life here sprang up pretty quickly
2018-01-21 07:22:15
XXCoder
we are already past that. so maybe just few million years
2018-01-21 07:22:16
MarcelineVQ
it's pretty unlikely that humans are special
2018-01-21 07:22:38
pfred1
though it did take a while to evolve
2018-01-21 07:22:45
XXCoder
exactly my point
2018-01-21 07:23:04
XXCoder
we (all life on earth) already did the hard work
2018-01-21 07:23:18
pfred1
and this planet being kind of marginal for supporting life helped
2018-01-21 07:23:41
gloops
Marcel mathematically unlikely, and yet no sign of other intelligent life has ever been detected
2018-01-21 07:23:58
pfred1
the Fermi paradox
2018-01-21 07:24:09
XXCoder
isaac talks about that quite a lot
2018-01-21 07:24:15
pfred1
where are they all?
2018-01-21 07:24:16
MarcelineVQ
the speed of light isn't so confusing as that, it takes a long long time for evidence to be evident
2018-01-21 07:24:17

if intelligence abounded in the universe space would be buzzing with artificial radio signals - there are none
2018-01-21 07:24:18

2018-01-21 07:24:54
XXCoder
im sure theres ets somewhere in universe
2018-01-21 07:24:59
gloops
Marcel our solar system is a relative latecomer, intelligent life had time to evolve elsewhere a billion or 2 years ago
2018-01-21 07:25:07
pfred1
but space is just too vast for them to ever visit here even if they do exist
2018-01-21 07:25:15
gloops
they would be here
2018-01-21 07:25:23
XXCoder

2018-01-21 07:25:35
pfred1
what we might see someday is AI
2018-01-21 07:25:41
gloops
pfred space is not big when you understand it
2018-01-21 07:25:50
XXCoder
the space thing (the rings one) may well be best chance of real ftl
2018-01-21 07:25:55
pfred1
like machines another civilization built that just go around eating solar systems
2018-01-21 07:26:13
gloops
its only like a scroll, you are never actually far from anywhere else, if you can see the route
2018-01-21 07:26:16
XXCoder
space dont seem to have light speed limit
2018-01-21 07:26:52
XXCoder
(the space itself, not "space" as in in vacuum)
2018-01-21 07:27:00
gloops
a quark can be here and in alpha centauri in a nano second
2018-01-21 07:27:05
gloops
or at the same time
2018-01-21 07:27:13
XXCoder
i wonder about that
2018-01-21 07:27:15
MarcelineVQ
XXCoder: hyperspace? you're talking about dropping something into something where physics have a different meaning so when you pp back out you look like you've achieved the impssible?
2018-01-21 07:27:22
pfred1
but can a quark support intelligence?
2018-01-21 07:27:36
XXCoder
MarcelineVQ: nah just compressing and expanding space
2018-01-21 07:27:39
gloops
pfred you are made of quarks
2018-01-21 07:27:48
MarcelineVQ
but space is always expanding
2018-01-21 07:28:11
XXCoder
yeah I mean using gravity. though we dont have that tech, if ever
2018-01-21 07:28:18
pfred1
gloops so what are the odds of all of my quarks teleporting to alpha centauri at the same time?
2018-01-21 07:28:20
MarcelineVQ
but what if quarks are little universes doh ho ho
2018-01-21 07:28:22
gloops
around 13% of your mass is not present at any one instant
2018-01-21 07:28:28
fragalot
hi
2018-01-21 07:28:38
gloops
it is elsewhere, anywhere in the universe
2018-01-21 07:29:03
MarcelineVQ
gloops that's uhm, not how things work, you can't apply the quantum to the macro directly like that
2018-01-21 07:29:04
XXCoder
I find that questionable.
2018-01-21 07:29:06
pfred1
damn I'm 13% heavier I really need to diet
2018-01-21 07:29:25

2018-01-21 07:29:29
pfred1
no wonder it seems harder sometimes to get up
2018-01-21 07:29:43
gloops
Marcel well you cant account for all your electrons
2018-01-21 07:29:55
MarcelineVQ
'why can't I hold all these electrons"
2018-01-21 07:30:44
MarcelineVQ
what makes you say that? it's true, for various actually unrelated reasons, but why do you say this?
2018-01-21 07:30:52
fragalot
gloops: actually, electrons only have a rest mass in the order of 10^-30 ish kg

XXCoder
pfred1: https://i.imgur.com/UmhODZR.jpg
2018-01-21 07:32:59
fragalot
gloops: and, researches have managed to observe electrons; and whlist you can't predict WHERE they are, you can predict that there is always one present in certain layers around the center of the nucleus.. so even if "your" electron goes AWOL, another will have taken it's place
2018-01-21 07:33:07
pfred1
XXCoder I'm tellign ya
2018-01-21 07:33:21
XXCoder
those bum elecrrons
2018-01-21 07:33:51
pfred1
yeah electrons don't so much flow as they do the wave
2018-01-21 07:34:24
gloops
fragalot nevertheless we cannot say we are consistent self contained lump of something
2018-01-21 07:34:25
pfred1
I mean if they really flowed like water through a hose they'd all come out the end of a wire and you'd have nothing left
2018-01-21 07:34:39
XXCoder
gloops: we arent, even without quantium stuff
2018-01-21 07:34:46
XXCoder
we constantly replace atoms
2018-01-21 07:34:52
fragalot
gloops: we can't, no. but that doesn't mean that our MASS changes by 13%
2018-01-21 07:35:06

2018-01-21 07:35:09

XXCoder where do replacement atoms come from?
2018-01-21 07:35:20
XXCoder
food. air. water.
2018-01-21 07:35:32
pfred1
those are molecules
2018-01-21 07:35:36
XXCoder
he;;, even touches
2018-01-21 07:35:40
fragalot
pfred1: molecules are made up of atoms
2018-01-21 07:35:44
pfred1
yes
2018-01-21 07:35:50
pfred1
but they act different in packages
2018-01-21 07:36:02
fragalot
and?
2018-01-21 07:36:12
fragalot
so because i've replaced a molecule, I have kept the atoms?
2018-01-21 07:36:13
XXCoder
53%. few percent to go
2018-01-21 07:36:19
pfred1
with us we need to worry more about cells
2018-01-21 07:36:24
gloops
knowing that the building blocks are not unique to us, uniqueness can only lie in the structure
2018-01-21 07:36:43

therefore with a blueprint of your structure, you can be replicated

2018-01-21 07:38:37
pfred1
right now research into human cloning is banned
2018-01-21 07:38:39

because it's "unethical" to do the research properly
2018-01-21 07:38:40

remember dolly?
2018-01-21 07:38:47

they researched into it more
2018-01-21 07:38:49
gloops
in 'A for Andromeda' the aliens in th andromeda galaxy know they cannot physically travel to us, so they send the information on how to build a machine to earth - which follows the intructions
2018-01-21 07:38:50
pfred1
well sure
2018-01-21 07:39:03

found out it wasnt genetic wear and tear that cause dolly to die early

there's talk that there's illegal human cloning experiments going on
2018-01-21 07:39:22
gloops
thats how it will be done - travel as information
2018-01-21 07:39:43
XXCoder
that'd be close to light speed yeah
2018-01-21 07:39:47
MarcelineVQ
cloning isn't very interesting, modification is, you can bet your ass every major gov. has some side project with fingers in that pie
2018-01-21 07:39:48
pfred1
some Italian guy a few years ago claimed he cloned a human but neve produced any evidence
2018-01-21 07:40:07
fragalot
gloops: is it "travel" if you don't actually go anywhere?
2018-01-21 07:40:17
fragalot
gloops: it's more like sending a messager
2018-01-21 07:40:25

imformation traveled.
2018-01-21 07:40:27
pfred1
fragalot we're always going somewhere

pfred1
he played a lot of cards too
2018-01-21 07:41:48
MarcelineVQ
no idea, it's a petty dumb movie but it had neat ideas in it
2018-01-21 07:41:54

lol yeah
2018-01-21 07:43:22
pfred1
nah past that
2018-01-21 07:43:28
MarcelineVQ
oh james woods
2018-01-21 07:43:31
XXCoder
book is wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy better.
2018-01-21 07:43:34
fragalot
gloops: just because your electrons are "borrowed" and "exchanged" constantly does not mean that your physical mass is fully transient.. for all intents and purposes, that mass is insignificant.
2018-01-21 07:43:36
MarcelineVQ
"but the recorder..."
2018-01-21 07:43:54
XXCoder
for one, she wasnt only passager.
2018-01-21 07:44:06
XXCoder
and that seat thing shit is just wtf
2018-01-21 07:44:11

so i am nothing but a structure, with emergent properties

2018-01-21 07:44:42

see if you wanted to create an artificial world, with intelligent occupants, but make the illusion so realistic they could never detect it wasnt real

XXCoder
looks like cant go below 53 humidity. guess outside is at that
2018-01-21 07:45:34
gloops
it would be like this
2018-01-21 07:45:55
pfred1
the matrix?
2018-01-21 07:46:09
gloops
the intelligent things will look at the world and try to understand it, the closer and closer they get as they look at the smallest components - the quarks
2018-01-21 07:46:13
fragalot
guys
2018-01-21 07:46:19
fragalot
did you know
2018-01-21 07:46:25
gloops
so a failsafe measure - dont let them look at quarks
2018-01-21 07:46:25
fragalot
that your brain decided it was the most important
2018-01-21 07:47:05
gloops
when the things in the matrix look at the quarks, the quarks disapear, they defy all means of logical understanding
2018-01-21 07:47:08
fragalot
gloops: why not?
2018-01-21 07:47:20
fragalot
let the sims do the real science for you
2018-01-21 07:47:22
gloops
there you have it - the matrix mkIII
2018-01-21 07:47:23
pfred1
there is no quark
2018-01-21 07:47:37
gloops
quarks are the bytes or the pixels
2018-01-21 07:48:43
fragalot
then what makes up the bits?
2018-01-21 07:48:56
pfred1

2018-01-21 07:49:41

god is probably a mathematician running a routine, this could be a program to find the key for some mystery we couldnt even comprehend

2018-01-21 07:49:58
fragalot
gloops: you lost me at "god"
2018-01-21 07:50:15
gloops
god being the designer of the matrix, but anyway
2018-01-21 07:50:35
pfred1
fragalot you may not have faith in God but He has faith in you
2018-01-21 07:51:01
fragalot
pfred1: xD
2018-01-21 07:51:23
MarcelineVQ
the hoary thing called reality is too alien for the yowling ape that builds cities to look at directly, there doesn't need to be a great mystery behind this. we evolved to chew on animals and plants, not to peel back the canvas. we're pretty good at it considering
2018-01-21 07:53:11
pfred1
we are victims of our own success

Odd.. Just took apart a 1965 fire ext and the valve release pin looks like silver based on the color and the style of the patina....
2018-01-21 08:05:34
XXCoder
old chrome?
2018-01-21 08:06:48
jesseg
it's not the color of chrome, it's not peeling, and it's slightly tarnished a smooth blackish tarnish where it was outside exposed to the air.
2018-01-21 08:07:03
jesseg
The color is that of silver, not chrome.
2018-01-21 08:08:16
jesseg
I've never seen chrome darken like silver.. It either gets rough spots or green or blue spots..
2018-01-21 08:08:23
jesseg
or peels :P
2018-01-21 08:08:31
XXCoder
hmm probably not
2018-01-21 08:08:37
XXCoder
but silver pin? odd
2018-01-21 08:09:15
jesseg
yeah, or thick maybe silver plated...? I do know silver was a little less valuable and more of an available industrial material long time ago
2018-01-21 08:10:02
XXCoder
serling silver isnt that expensive
2018-01-21 08:10:07

I guess I could take a piece of silver and this and hang them in some silver nitrate and see what the voltage difference is. If they are different metals they'll produce a voltage.

Well, silver was drastically less expensive in the 60's I think.

A friend of mine used to work at a place that made A/C radiators or something and they used silver solder.. Then at one time the price of silver went up so much they put their hundreds of pounds of silver solder stock in a locking box and found a cheaper way to do it :P

by valve pin I mean the rod that sticks into the valve body -- the one that the release level presses on the end of to open the valve and release the powder.

So it may be they didn't want to use stainless and didn't want any chance of the rod rusting and causing it to jam

The other end, on the other side of the rubber seal, is brass. I don't know if it screws together as two halves or just one end is silver plated
